Overseas students studying in the UK are not only halfway across the world from their families and support network but they are also living in a different culture.
As an adult, we all know how reassuring it is to talk through our problems with a family member, to have people we can rely on for help when needed. Just knowing that you are not alone and to know that family will look after us or check in on us when we are ill or struggling is something we all take forgranted until we don’t have it anymore.
Covid- 19 made us more aware than ever of the importance of having a good family network. We at the Overseas Student Wellbeing Service aim to support our students not only when it comes to viruses such as the novovirus, SARS, RSV and influenza A and B but also to support their mental health. Students that do not have a local family support networks have been reported to be 50% more likely to suffer from depression at some point during their studies. However, we believe that with a family network that is there when needed the students will feel supported and thus happy.
We at the Overseas Student Wellbeing Service can give them the support they need culturally and academically to make sure that they do not become a victim of depression. We do this by matching them with an English family, who will care for the student as if they were a member of their own family.
